Taekwondo lessons paying off

The boys have recently started with Taekwondo lessons and they’ve come out swinging.  I am proud to say that their first exposure to Karate Kid was with Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita (although they love the Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan version too).  They were so excited to hear about us signing them up for Taekwondo lessons.  Not exactly Karate but close enough for them.  Like other kids trying out new sports, we threw in the disclaimer that this is a trial run and we wouldn’t officially sign them up unless they really wanted to continue.

The first session was great and both boys came home excited.  They were began to eye the “official” uniforms and were asking . . .”when do we get uniforms?”

The trial period was 4 sessions and they loved it from the start.  At the begin of their 4th session, we invested in the uniforms as it was obvious this was something they wanted to pursue with a passion.

A few weeks later we could tell that the lessons were paying off.  In this time period, Andrew had his tonsil surgery.  When the doctor came out to give us an update, she asked,

Doctor:  Does Andrew play soccer?

Mom:  Not soccer but he is in Taekwondo.

Doctor:  That explains it . . . he has a great kick!

Ooops, his self defense instincts must have kicked in.  Hope he didn’t come out of anesthesia kicking and punching :)

As he was recovering, Andrew was able to sleep in Mom & Dad’s bed so that Mom could monitor him at night and provide the nightly pain medication.  Ben was a bit jealous (even though we did the same thing for him a couple of years back).  Since Dad was kicked out of his spot, he crashed with Ben that night.  In the middle of the night Dad woke up with a jab to the stomach . . . shortly after, a kick to the chest . . . finally waking up wondering what’s going on, Dad stopped the upcoming blow to the face and quickly yelled out:

Dad:  BEN!!! *while holding Ben’s foot, inches from his face*

Ben:  *immediately waking up* oh, sorry dad . . . *rolling over and going back to bed*

In asking about this the next morning, he explained that he had a dream that kids were chasing him at the playground and was trying to kick them when they started going after him.  :D

Definitely getting our money’s worth.
